Survivors of domestic violence in a rural area of California tell their stories

This project involved the stories of approximately 20 women in rural Plumas Country who are survivors of domestic violence. The participants used cameras to document their experiences and participated in story sharing sessions. A selection of the women’s photographs was exhibited at a local gallery and two area restaurants, while the stories were developed into a performance piece for presentation to the community.

The goal of the project was to increase awareness of domestic violence among people in the area, particularly high school students, and to gain a better understanding of the impact of current laws and practices on women’s lives.

“Over the past several decades, women have gained increasing legal protection against domestic violence, but much more needs to be done,’ said Project Director Lisa Tobe. “I hope that this project revealed what’s working in a rural community like ours and what’s not working, and galvanized people to work for more effective solutions to this problem.”
