Latino youths to bring new life to San Francisco history
This multifaceted sound project will involve Latino youths in researching historical events of the 1960s in San Francisco’s Mission District via an audio archive, exploring parallels in their world today through field recordings and interviews, and creating an audio CD and website linking the events of the past with the youths’ present-day concerns.
Julio Cesar Morales, an artist in resident at Galeria de la Raza, the project sponsor, will conduct the project in collaboration with artist and writer David Goldberg and Daniel Phil Gonzales, associate professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University.
Three events will take place in connection with the project, including a youth networking event featuring a live performance led by the youths and Morales, as well as a “networking jam session,” during which participating youths will share their perspectives about the project and the stories they collected with an online community of their peers.
